Human-Computer Interaction+Design Lab

Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) is an interdisciplinary field that explores the design, use, and impact of interactive computing technologies on individuals and society. Our research investigates how technology mediates human experiences in diverse social, emotional, and cultural contexts—from online teaching and mobile shopping to family communication and survivor advocacy. We examine the roles of interfaces, social presence, and user agency in shaping these experiences, and we design systems that respond to real-world needs such as facilitating long-distance care through telepresence and reducing computer vision syndrome through deployable interventions. By combining qualitative insights with system design, we aim to create technologies that are empathetic, inclusive, and grounded in lived experience. Human-AI Interaction (HAI) is an interdisciplinary field that aims to create AI systems that can effectively collaborate with and assist humans. We combine knowledge from human-computer interaction, AI, cognitive science, and social psychology to develop AI that enhances human capabilities, with a focus on societal AI and conversational agents. Social Computing examines the interplay between social behavior and technology, focusing on how people interact with and through computing systems. We combine computer science, social sciences, and other fields to develop technologies and predictive models that support social interactions and collaborations in digital spaces. AI Journalism is a new field that applies AI to assist journalists and media organizations. We aim to use AI to improve the efficiency, accuracy, and quality of journalism while considering the ethical implications.
