Our philosophy is to focus on fundamental material properties and phenomena in areas highly relevant for energy applications such as electrochemical storage or thermoelectrics. Even for materials prevalent in devices we use on a daily basis, it is not uncommon to find significant inconsistencies in our current understanding. For instance, most of the overvoltage observed while cycling Li-ion battery electrodes cannot be entirely accounted for in a self-consistent manner, showcasing our poor understanding on the microscopic kinetic processes. We aim to identify such knowledge gaps (the “scientific dept” in technology) and deliver improved understanding to the community.
