At the Neural Processing Lab, we investigate how the brain stabilizes what it has learned while remaining capable of change. Our research connects sleep-dependent memory consolidation, adaptive neural dynamics, and the emergence of insight and creativity. We study how communication across brain regions stabilizes learned patterns of neural activity, and how these representations are flexibly used and updated as behavioral demands change. Building on this foundation, we explore whether sleep and dream-related activity help the brain reorganize existing knowledge and generate new ideas and solutions. We seek neural biomarkers of dream-related states across species and investigate how changes in neural dynamics may contribute to insight and creativity. Our approach brings together systems and computational neuroscience through long-term neural recordings, quantitative behavioral analysis, computational modeling, and targeted circuit manipulations. By connecting experimental observations with testable models, we aim to understand not only how the brain remembers, but how it uses and transforms experience to discover something new.
